I totally agree. When I was a senior in high school, I had the unique pleasure of being in an English class that celebrated the Harlem Renaissance with a full-blown interactive recreation of various aspects of its rich history. Our class divided into groups that each focused on a different aspect of the HR; I was in the music group, so naturally, we recreated a scene from the Cotton Club, while another group acted out the parts of writers including James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, and Richard Wright. Imagine my surprise when I sat in an American Literature class 4 years later in college and virtually nobody in my class knew about the Harlem Renaissance, let alone its importance in American literature history (and American history in general). Many had heard of or read at least parts of works by writers like Wright and Baldwin, but they didn't understand the experience and the vibrancy of the time. I may have had my Cotton Club experience in the senior cafeteria room, but at least I had some experience. I can't imagine how all of that would be lost in an online course. It's just not enough!
